Preparing a new subfloor from OSB boards before the floor covering is laid

Service 06

Laminate flooring

Laminate is a hard-wearing and affordable floor. To stay good-looking for long, it needs a flat subfloor and careful laying.

We lay laminate as a floating floor on an underlay that evens out small irregularities, dampens footsteps and protects against moisture from below. The boards click together, so the floor is not glued to the subfloor.

Before laying we check that the subfloor is flat. We level larger irregularities, because laminate on an uneven base flexes and its joints can open over time. We leave an expansion gap along the walls and finish transitions with thresholds.

What we pay attention to

01

Wear class

Laminate is graded into classes by how hard-wearing it is. A lower class is enough for living areas, while hallways and business premises call for a tougher one.

02

A flat subfloor

Unevenness under laminate shows up as flexing and creaking. That is why we check the subfloor before laying and level it where needed.

03

Expansion gaps

A floating floor moves as one piece. That is why we leave a gap along walls and fixed elements, covered by the skirting boards.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can laminate be laid over old tiles?

Often, yes, if the tiles are firmly fixed and the surface is flat enough. We level the grout lines and any unevenness where needed. After a visit we can tell you whether it is possible in your case.

Laminate or parquet?

Laminate costs less and resists scratches, but it cannot be sanded. Parquet is real wood and can be restored. We advise you based on the room and your budget.

Is laminate suitable for underfloor heating?

Many laminates are suitable for underfloor heating, but you need a product and an underlay that the manufacturer approves for it. Call 041 829 532 and we will advise you.
