Oak herringbone parquet in an empty room, with a sanding machine in the background

Herringbone and patterns

Herringbone is one of the most beautiful parquet patterns and one of the most demanding. Every piece has to be cut and laid precisely.

In herringbone, the strips are laid at an angle so that their ends meet in a zigzag. The pattern gives a room rhythm and a classic look, but it does not forgive mistakes: even a small deviation soon shows across a larger floor.

So we start by measuring and planning. We set the axis of the pattern according to the room, the doors and the light, then lay from the centre towards the edges. Solid parquet laid in a pattern is sanded after laying and finished with lacquer or oil.

What we pay attention to

01

Axis of the pattern

We set the direction of the pattern so that it sits well with the shape of the room, the longest wall or the main entrance.

02

Precise cutting

At the walls and transitions the strips have to be trimmed at exactly the right angle. Precise cuts are what set a good pattern apart from an average one.

03

Sanding after laying

Solid parquet laid in a pattern is sanded after laying so the joints are level, and then finished with lacquer or oil.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is herringbone more expensive than straight plank?

Usually, yes, because the pattern needs more cutting, more time to lay and a little more material because of offcuts. The quote for your room shows the exact difference.

Can you restore old herringbone parquet?

Often, yes. Old solid herringbone parquet can be sanded, its gaps filled and refinished. Loose strips are fixed before sanding and damaged ones replaced where possible.

Which pattern suits a small room?

Straight plank laid along the longer wall makes a room look longer. Herringbone can also look lovely in a smaller room if the strips are the right size. We will advise you during the visit.
